The Boston Syncro series Igloo is a redundant yet simple to administer Windows Storage Server 2012 cluster comprised of two Supermicro servers featuring the latest Intel E5-2600 processors. The solution uses two LSI Syncro® controller cards to create high availability direct-attached storage as an alternative to traditional Fibre Channel or iSCSI shared storage arrays.
Both high-performance cluster nodes are configured to share a common Supermicro dual expander SAS disk shelf for backend data storage, eliminating the need for a costly shared storage SAN implementation. Spread across both the front and rear panels are 45 hot pluggable HDD bays supporting high capacity 3.5" HDD's, all housed in one space saving 4U rack mounted enclosure for maximum density.
LSI Syncro® uses a clustering configuration where controller to controller connectivity is provided through the SAS interface instead of a traditional Ethernet link, enabling more efficient shared storage and high levels of availability. Controllers are able to mirror their cache data through direct SAS links to enable the highest performance and lowest latency possible, yet still deliver resilience in the event of system failure.
This technology also allows both controllers to be active on the same RAID volumes for resource load balancing, helping to ensure that applications are using the most responsive server to boost performance and help prevent any one server from being overburdened.
Combined with Windows Storage Server 2012 the Syncro series Igloo is a powerful unified NAS & SAN solution supporting some of the most challenging applications in IT storage today including virtualisation, cloud services, and high performance file storage. Additionally, Windows Storage Server 2012 features enterprise storage technologies such as deduplication, compression, and snapshots as standard, whilst also supporting the most popular storage protocols today including SMB, NFS, FTP, and iSCSI.
Based on the widely accepted and supported Windows Server platform, implementation and administration is incredibly straightforward, especially for administrators already familiar with other Microsoft products. In addition to the benefits of familiarity, native support for active directory makes domain integration and user and permission management a simple task.
