The Boston Fenway Hyper-V Syncro series is a redundant yet simple to administer Hyper-V Server 2012 cluster comprised of two Supermicro servers featuring the latest Intel E5-2600 processors. The solution uses two LSI Syncro® controller cards to create high availability direct-attached storage as an alternative to traditional Fibre Channel or iSCSI shared storage arrays.
Both high-performance cluster nodes are configured to share a common sTec dual expander SAS disk shelf for backend data storage, eliminating the need for a costly shared storage SAN implementation. 24 hot pluggable drive bays support both high capacity, high performance 2.5" hard disk or solid state disks, all housed together in one space saving 2U rack mounted enclosure for maximum density. Additionally, redundant power supply and I/O modules guarantee availability in the unlikely event of failure, granting much needed peace of mind.
LSI Syncro® uses a clustering configuration where controller to controller connectivity is provided through the SAS interface instead of a traditional Ethernet link, enabling more efficient shared storage and high levels of availability. Controllers are able to mirror their cache data through direct SAS links to enable the highest performance and lowest latency possible, yet still deliver resilience in the event of system failure.
This technology also allows both controllers to be active on the same RAID volumes for resource load balancing, helping to ensure that applications are using the most responsive server to boost performance and help prevent any one server from being overburdened.
Combined with Hyper-V Server 2012 the Syncro series is a powerful virtualisation cluster solution supporting some of the most challenging applications in IT today. Hyper-V Server is a lightweight stand-alone operating system that contains the hypervisor, Windows Server driver model, virtualization capabilities, and supporting components such as failover clustering, but does not contain the robust set of features and roles as the Windows Server operating system. As a result Hyper-V Server produces a small footprint and requires minimal overhead and provides a simple server virtualization solution for any size organization.
Based on the widely accepted and supported Windows Server platform, implementation and administration is incredibly straightforward, especially for administrators already familiar with other Microsoft products. In addition to the benefits of familiarity, native support for active directory makes domain integration and management a simple task.
