Boston partners with Edinburgh University for ISC Student Cluster Competition

Winning partnership returns to ISC to reclaim title

The team, who previously won the Linpack award in 2014 will be utilising a cluster of, a slightly modified version of, Boston ANNA Pascal systems which are water cooled by CoolIT Systems technology.

The Boston ANNA Pascal is an industry leading Pascal-based server - a masterclass of server design and innovation, creating a streamlined architecture which eliminates complex cabling and GPU pre-heat for maximum airflow, cooling and performance-per-watt. The high-density 1U server can support up to 4 Pascal GPU’s, making it the most optimal system for scalable GPU acceleration.  In addition to the 4 GPUs, the 1U server provides 2 x PCI-E Gen 3 slots for InfiniBand or Omnipath allowing strong RDMA performance.

NVIDIA® Pascal™ architecture is purpose-built to act as the engine of computers that learn, see, and simulate our world, and as a result, Boston’s appliance promises to deliver lightning fast, absolute performance to HPC and deep learning workloads with infinite computing needs.

Emmanouil Farsarakis, Applications Consultant at EPCC is grateful to Boston and partners for supporting their competition entry;

“Participating in the Student Cluster Competition can be greatly beneficial to students. With the help of EPCC, students are brought into contact with an industrial partner – Boston Limited – who are providing all the hardware and relevant support the team requires to build a competitive, innovative, energy efficient cluster.

This sort of support allows students to directly access cutting edge technologies which they may never otherwise have had and make use of their newly acquired knowledge to port and optimise widely used HPC and data science codes to their cluster.”

David Power, Head of HPC, Boston Limited adds;
“Once again we are pleased to be collaborating with EPCC in the Student Cluster Competition at ISC. With previous record-breaking success under our belt and the support of industry giants like NVIDIA and CoolIT Systems behind us, the highly skilled and motivated team from EPCC are optimistic for another success this year. We invite attendees of ISC to visit us and lend their support for what is shaping up to be an exciting competition.”
