A look back at Supercomputing 23 with Boston

The stage was set, and Boston took to Supercomputing 23, standing alongside tech giants NVIDIA, Supermicro, AMD and Intel to unveil a symphony of staggering technologies that left attendees buzzing with excitement.

Boston unveils the Igloo AI+

At this year’s SC23, we showcased a first look at the Boston Igloo AI+, powered by PEAK: AIO, which is emerging as a groundbreaking platform designed to tap into the full potential of AI. Developed by Boston, the Igloo AI+ is tailored to meet the demands of AI workloads, providing scalability and efficiency. With its robust architecture, the Igloo AI+ is set to be pivotal in driving advancements across various industries, from healthcare to finance and everything in between, where AI-driven solutions are becoming increasingly integral.

A resounding return for AMD and Boston

The dynamic duo of Boston and AMD returned with a bang, putting the spotlight on the AMD Instinct MI200 Series Accelerator and the 4th Generation AMD EPYC Processors. These technological powerhouses, purpose-built for servers and supercomputers, took centre stage, ready to tackle the world's most pressing challenges.


NVIDIA and Supermicro left us all in awe

The collaboration between NVIDIA and Supermicro was amazingly received, showcasing the formidable DGX H100 system—a heavyweight in the realm of Enterprise AI. But the real showstopper was the 2U NVIDIA Grace Super Chip system from Supermicro, promising versatility for HPC, AI and beyond.

Intel unleashed Gaudi2, a deep learning powerhouse

The Boston booth was ablaze with the power of Intel's Gaudi2 system. This highly impressive system is set to drive deep learning to new heights, offering improved price-performance and operational efficiency. Whether in the cloud or your data centre, Gaudi2 brings the AI industry the versatility it craves.

Pushing the boundaries at SC23

This year CGG, a leading geoscience company, showcased its innovative contributions to the world of exploration and technology. During their time at SC23, CGG showed that they are pushing the boundaries of seismic imaging and reservoir characterisation, harnessing the power of supercomputing. By leveraging advanced computational techniques, CGG is poised to redefine how we explore and understand the Earth's subsurface, making significant strides in the field of geophysics.

Next-gen storage systems from Western Digital

Western Digital made waves at SC23 with the release of a storage system specifically tailored for AI applications. In the ever-changing landscape of artificial intelligence, efficient storage solutions are essential, and Western Digital's new storage system addresses this need. The new innovation reflects a commitment to providing robust and scalable storage infrastructure, ensuring that AI-driven workloads have the necessary support to thrive in the era of supercomputing.

NVIDIA's SC23 special address gave us all a glimpse into the future

NVIDIA's special address at SC23 provided a poignant glimpse into the future of supercomputing. The star of the show was the NVIDIA HGX H200—the world's leading AI computing platform. Containing up to 141GB of HBM3e, it's a performance powerhouse, especially for models like GPT-3. The address outlined NVIDIA's innovations, creating a new class of AI supercomputers with enhanced parallelism for generative AI, HPC and hybrid quantum computing.

NVIDIA also unveiled their supercomputer, Jupiter, which stands as a beacon of scientific advancement in Germany's Jülich centre. With 93 exaflops of AI training and 1 exaflop for HPC applications, this incredible machine consumes just over 18 megawatts of power. Jupiter utilises the NVIDIA quad GH200 system architecture and NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiBand networking and is set to play a crucial role in climate and weather predictions, drug discovery and hybrid quantum computing.

TOP500 dominance and AI exploration

NVIDIA's dominance echoed in the TOP500 list, where 38 out of 49 new supercomputers boasted NVIDIA tech. The H100 Tensor Core GPUs played a pivotal role, contributing over 2.5 exaflops of HPC performance. Accelerated, energy-efficient supercomputing was the name of the game and the Argonne National Laboratory's use of generative AI to develop GenSLMs, exploring COVID gene sequences, highlighted the real-world impact of AI exploration.
