3D Printing and GPU Computing at Milan Design Week 2015, 14-19 April 2015

Posted on 20 April, 2015

Milan Design Week attracts more than 400,000 visitors each year and this year Boston Limited have been lucky enough to get involved! Daghan Cam, an architect and researcher who is currently lecturing at University College London, is attending the event to exhibit a 3D print. Having used Boston workstations combined with high end NVIDIA GPUs during his career to carry out research, Daghan has been able to create incredibly complex abstract structures; 3D printing then becomes the ultimate solution for manufacturing the complex forms that are created through the design process. His work displays the computational design research carried out at UCL which focuses on GPU computing, simulation and bringing high resolution architecture into the material world.

Materialise, an innovative 3D printing company who have the capacity to print models up to 2 metres in length, have supported the MDW2015 project by printing a robotic fabrication of Daghan's high resolution simulation. Focusing on the use of minimal materials and therefore the overall reduction in cost of 3D prints, Materialise have helped to create a prototypical piece which resembles an abstract form instead of assigning a functional use to it. The final design which has been on show at MDW2015 this week will eventually be shipped to London for future exhibitions and publications.

It is an important part of the design process 'to focus the attention on the process of design rather than the end form' - Daghan Cam
