Boston Green Power 1300-T

In this day and age where many server platforms are not used anywhere near their processing potential, many applications and appliances would be better placed within a low power small form factor server. Our GP (Green Power) range has been power optimised to significantly reduce the energy costs and the global impact of servers we daily use.

The Boston Green Power 1300-T server has recently been reviewed by Strategic Facilities Datacenter Magazine - read on to find out more.

The server sports a 1.86GHz L3426 Xeon, which delivers a much lower TDP of 45W than other members of the 3400 family, which are rated at 95W. The L3426 supports Intel's Hyper-Threading and Turbo-Boost technologies - with the latter, if only one physical core in the L3426 is being used, the clock rate can be boosted by nearly 75% to 3.2GHz...

...A chassis depth of about 22in means the 1300-T will slot easily into most rack cabinets, and it offers good storage potential with the inclusion of eight SFF drive bays and three 500GB Hitachi SATA drives preconfigured in a RAID5 array...

...The server can be accessed remotely via a web browser, which provides a tidy interface with plenty of operational information...

...User access controls are excellent, as you can use LDAP or RADIUS servers for external authentication to the remote controller. KVM-over-IP allows you to access the BIOS setup menu and OS remotely. Virtual media is also on the menu, and it's worth noting that all the blue chips only offer these two features as chargeable options...

...Removing the lid reveals a compact Supermicro X8SIL-F motherboard with the Xeon processor mounted by a solid passive heatsink. There's a lot of space around this board so airflow won't be impeded...

...Four small dual-rotor fans provide all chassis air movement, and noise levels are commendably low...

...We found the 1300-T a thrifty customer in our power consumption tests, with it drawing a modest 40W with Server 2008 in idle. With SiSoft Sandra thrashing all eight cores, we saw this peak at 80W...

...There aren't many 1U rack servers around that can support eight SFF hot-swap drive bays, which make the Green Power 1300-T rather unusual. It's also low on power consumption and offers full remote management as standard.
