Boston Lead the Race to Reduce the Compute-Storage Gap

Posted on 18 December, 2014

Getting flash closer to compute is a long existing gap in the route to improving overall server compute efficiency, especially when you are dealing with multi-core, multi-socket CPUS that demand an enormous amount of data. It's an obstacle that many vendors are still 'hustling' to overcome.

Boston, in partnership with Diablo Technologies and SanDisk, have already closed the final latency gap of current storage platforms by delivering a range of certified server solutions that remove I/O performance bottlenecks and place flash storage as close to the CPU and applications as possible. The Boston MCS Server range features SanDisk's UlltraDIMM™ - which utilises Diablo Memory Channel Storage (MCS). The Boston MCS Server range enables unprecedented performance for a broad range of big-data analytical workloads, high frequency trading, in-memory compute, virtualisation, VDI, and database.

The ULLtraDIMM powered by Memory-Channel Storage is an ultra low latency NAND flash storage device that plugs directly into the existing memory DIMM slots and is therefore directly connected to the DDR3 system memory bus. Memory-channel storage provides scalable performance by using an array of ULLtraDIMMs in a parallel manner expanding memory storage capacities from tens of Gigabytes to Terabytes.

The Boston Quattro 1280-6 is a high performance and high availability scale out VMware vSphere™ 5.5 virtualisation cluster which integrates VMware Virtual SAN™ enabling flexible storage resilience and modularity. Featuring SanDisk's ULLtraDIMM™ Boston Quattro 1280-6 offers the flexibility and energy efficient performance of both at a fraction of the cost of all SSD solutions.

With the Boston MCS Server range, the Compute-Storage gap has been reduced – the storage is closer both spatially and performance-wise to compute which in turn reduces the IO wait time, decreases jitter and improves performance - the holy grail of server compute efficiency. Leveraging SanDisk's ULLtraDIMM™ SSD, and in turn Diablo Memory Channel Storage – Boston can offer customers a cost-effective flexible, energy efficient, high performance solution.
